- The Design View: Craig, please tell us how you started off as a designer?
- Craig Redman: I was always drawing logo versions of my name and initials when I was a kid, or copying famous Australian paintings in colour pencil. I also carried a gridded pad around with me when I was 10 to redesign family members homes - so if I was at my grandma's I'd redesign the living room and decide which walls should be knocked down etc.
- The Design View: How you would best describe your style of work?
- Craig Redman: My work is filled with simple messages executed in a colourful, bold and secretly optimistic way. I work in a bunch of mediums, specializing mostly in illustration, typography, pattern design and character design.
- The Design View: Who has influenced you the most over the years?
- Craig Redman: My influences include: Peter Max, Haps hash and the Coloured Coat, television, Wes Wilson, David Hockney, My Bloody Valentine, Yayoi Kusama, The Renaissance, Takashi Murakami, Kaws, NeNe Leakes, Jeff Koons, Memphis design, Roy Lichtenstein, John Baldessari.
- The Design View: Please tell us a bit about your solo exhibition "And a miserable day to you too"?
- Craig Redman: The exhibition centred around my character Darcel at Parisian superstore Colette, who I often collaborate with. Darcel is a miserable character that sulks around New York chronicling the ups and downs of everyday life - from depressing introspective moments to getting inappropriately drunk at an gallery opening. The exhibition featured paintings, prints, sculpture and animation.
- The Design View: What is the Australian design scene like?
- Craig Redman: There are lots of absolutely amazing designers coming out of Australia. It certainly has the talent pool, I think it's just a matter of learning how to turn that talent into an internationally desirable product that takes a while to nurture.
- The Design View: Do you have any advice for aspiring designers?
- Craig Redman: Be hopelessly cynical, yet desperately hopeful.
- The Design View: What tools do you use for your work?
- Craig Redman: iPhone camera, pencil, paper, laptop, Wacom, Freehand, coffee, Photoshop, blog.
